Welcome! My name is Jennifer and I am the expat housewife. I’m an American expat and working housewife living in The Hague, Netherlands, and I’m here to share my adjustments with you.
For me, moving abroad offered a kind of Eat, Pray, Love fantasy (cliche, I know. I saw your eyes roll when I said it). Cute Dutch conversations and the ever enticing European lifestyle came to mind as I packed boxes and gave away wedding presents. Quickly, the difference between a book and real life hit me. Sorry to say my friends, but adjusting ain’t no fantasy.
Once we landed, my husband started work right away, and did well. Expat housewife life, however, was not exactly working for me. Actually, Europe in general wasn’t working for me. Timidness muted my cute Dutch conversations. Homesickness burned all joy. The super wife dream went out the door and negativity crept in. I was miserable.
Good news though, I’m not miserable anymore. This blog is about adjusting to adjustments; experiencing life and figuring out what to do. Lessons were learned, but my life is better because of them. Now, I don’t drink, I’m a much better cook, I run my own business and I’ve lost 20 pounds (woot woot!). I’m a happy, working professional with a wonderful domestic life, and I want readers to find joy like I have, or at least get a good laugh at my expense.
This blog serves to help those who are going through major changes in their life. Moving abroad is difficult, and I wish I had an online community to commiserate with, or at least talk to. It was a lonely period in my life, and I want readers to know that they’re not alone. Feel free to read at your leisure and drop a comment or two. I hope my little stories can give you a sense of belonging, wherever you are.
